Introducing the Filox/Catalox system, the next generation of Iron & Sulfur filters. Iron causes a lot of staining and hydrogen sulfide (sulfur) gives you that rotten egg odor. Manganese is another of the big stainers leaving black stains. The Filox/Catalox system uses Filox/Catalox media that oxidizes the iron, sulfur, and manganese from your water changing it to a form that can be trapped and filtered out. It is a very dense media that then traps the oxidized iron and sulfur holding it in the filter media until the control head automatically backflushes to clean itself. A higher percentage of the active ingredient allows it to remove higher levels of contaminates than standard iron filters, and also increases it's life expectancy. All automatic, once you install this and set it up, nothing else to do except enjoy your new clear, clean, odor and stain free water! This system is great for people with iron slightly higher than the standard Birm and Pyrolox systems will remove, but who don't want to use chemicals or don't want to make the price jump to air injection systems. These systems come complete with tank, media and your choice of the Fleck 2510 mechanical control head or the Fleck 7000SXT digital control head, both of which backwash automatically.

Filox/Catalox Iron, Sulfur, & Manganese Filters - How They Work

Filox/Catalox works on the principle of a catalyst reaction, but itself remains relatively unchanged. This reaction is accompanied with the formation of intermediate compound or compounds, such as higher oxides of manganese. By alternate composition and decomposition of these oxides, the Filox/Catalox is left unchanged. Filox/Catalox works on a principle whereby the hydrogen sulfide, iron, and manganese are actually oxidized in the media and simple backwashing cleans the bed. Filox/Catalox is very dense and heavy and stops the oxidized solid form of iron, manganese, and hydrogen sulfide from proceeding any further through the media (anything greater than 20 microns). Since the Filox/Catalox media is so dense and heavy, high backwash rates are required to clean the media. No chemical regeneration is required and nothing is imparted into the drinking water.

Filox/Catalox works equally well on three main classes of water:

Those waters which begin to precipitate hydrogen sulfide, iron and manganese on exposure to air, usually hard water containing carbonates, sulfates, or both.
Those waters which will hold hydrogen sulfide, iron, and manganese in solution indefinitely, even when chlorinated and/or aerated. These elements usually combine with organic acids and appear in colloidal form.
Those waters which contain hydrogen sulfide, iron, and manganese, or all, in each of the above forms and therefore deposit a part, but not all, of the element after aeration, chlorination or ozone, and cannot be removed entirely by simple filtration.

Filox/Catalox is a logical alternative to chlorination, greensand, birm and pyrolox when used for hydrogen sulfide, iron, and manganese.

Filox/Catalox has also proven to be an excellent compliment to aeration, chlorination, and ozone. Filox/Catalox acts not only as a turbidity filter, but also a polishing filter for any breakthrough of hydrogen sulfur, iron, or manganese with the use of aeration.
